It's the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born. The Moon passes through a sign in about two and a half days, so people born in the same month often have different Moon signs. Western astrology reads it as your emotional side; in Vedic astrology your Moon sign (rashi) is the sign your daily horoscope is read from.

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. They are about 24° apart today (the ayanamsa), so your Vedic rashi is often the sign before your Western Moon sign. This calculator uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in India.

Vedic astrology divides the Moon's path into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each, and each nakshatra into four padas. Your janma (birth) nakshatra is the one the Moon was in when you were born. It's used for naming and for matching horoscopes.

The Moon moves about 13° a day. Without a time we work from noon and tell you whether the Moon changed sign or nakshatra during that day. If it didn't, the answer holds whatever time you were born.

The Moon's position comes from astronomy-engine, an open-source library accurate to well under a degree of arc. Your birth place sets the time zone, including old daylight-saving and war-time clock changes. Results agree with Drik Panchang to the minute on the dates we checked.
